Ultimately, its unique offerings of the ultimate experience in land-based whale watching and shark cage-diving, pristine Blue Flag beaches, excellent wine industry and top-class restaurants and accommodation make the Cape Whale Coast a “must do” for tourists… and an ideal place to work and live in for all who call it home.
In the background, though, a top performer—Overstrand Municipality—labours relentlessly to ensure this treasure trove’s clockwork ticks over smoothly. Providing municipal services to an area exceeding 1708 km2 with a population well in excess of the estimated 74500 souls1 is no easy feat, as the 25-strong Council and personnel corps of around 1100 can attest to.
Nevertheless, not one to shy away from a challenge, Overstrand has set its sights firmly on being revered as a Centre of Excellence for all it serves, notably the communities of Hermanus, Gansbaai, Stanford, Kleinmond and everyone in between.

WATER QUALITY AT MUNICIPALITY’S WATER SCHEMES
|
The Department of Water Affairs (DWA) recommends that municipalities from time to time publish information on the quality of drinking water supplied to consumers as well as waste water effluent quality results.
Water quality is measured against code 0241 set by the South African National Standards (SANS) for drinking water. SANS’s Class I standards can be regarded as the ideal quality for drinking water, while SANS Class II water can still be regarded as fit for human consumption but with the proviso that it should be attended to over the long term.
On the accompanying drinking water quality table the average scores attained by its eight water schemes over the past three months can be seen. Water samples are collected monthly from 55 points and sent to accredited laboratories for analysis. Thirteen different bacteriological, chemical and physical parameters are measured regularly.
Overstrand Municipality’s water quality is of an outstanding quality, with 90% of the average results complying with Class I standards, a further 9% with Class II and only a 1% aesthetic parameter falling outside the Class II standard. Upgrades currently being planned or already in process include the Preekstoel water purification works in Hermanus, a new water purification plant at De Kelders and the commissioning of new boreholes at Stanford.

BURGEMEESTER ONDERSKRAAG KLEINMOND-STRANDSPAN
|
